Average Age impact on matches (old fellas)

To addresss teams which were far too young I put in some changes a number of seasons ago, so ideally you needed an average age of 25+ otherwise there would be a negative impact on your teams performance in a match. I'm looking to do something similiar where the average age is really high as well now. This is just a heads up so you can spend the next season getting your squads in order, then for the start of next season i'll put something in. obviously the overall impact will be different to having too young a team, but I think this is something we need as its currently too easy to just stack a team with 35 year old free agents. My initial thoughts are that this should only come in where the average age is 32 or more Let me know what you think

here is some stats in reallife: Bundesliga - Average age of the starting XI | Transfermarkt Premier League - Average age of the starting XI | Transfermarkt LaLiga - Average age of the starting XI | Transfermarkt Ligue 1 - Average age of the starting XI | Transfermarkt Serie A - Average age of the starting XI | Transfermarkt 23 is very young and 30 is very old for a starting lineup.

thanks Kamelkaze...so having a negative factor from 32 or even 31 should be reasonable

I think that the age is not important. Experience is important! For example: A player of 20 years old playing in the first team for 4 years is far better than a player of 25 years that is playing his first game! I am playing with a very young team with good players but the results aren't very good.... edited by Zapper on 06/10/2023

Although at the upper end of the age range, fitness has to come into play. Peter Pan was an exception.

Kind of agree with Zapper on this one. I mean, if you have a 16 year old player start every match for five straight seasons I'd think he is well adjusted in terms of mental abilities and club chemistry due to his match experience.

And imagine the opposite side of the spectrum. A 30 year old player who has been in the reserves his entire career. Finally gets to start his first match. I don't imagine he brings a boost to the squad just because of his age. As he doesn't have the match experience to be a true veteran and mentor.

I don't disagree with you, I'm not sure that anyone was arguing against what you said, but confess I don't follow what being 'with Zapper' on this one means. Think I will step out as we're in danger of going down a blind alley of misunderstanding.

for you information: you can get every 16 year old player at the start of the season to 1000 experience really easy with friendlies.

Does experience even matter under the current system? Maybe experience of players should have a bigger impact on match performance. Or a chemistry score that is higher by having the same players playing together over an extended period of time.

Sounds sensible to me, although I think a strategy of stacking a team with only 35 year old free agents might eventually punish itself! As for the other stuff discussed in the thread, I wouldn't be in favour of messing with the match engine over all that, and haven't had any problems with the way experience works, though I mightn't be understanding the arguments properly. Although if it's true that you can get a 16 year old up to 1000 experience just from friendlies, then I think ideally that could be different, so it still requires competitive gametime to reach 1000. Would be good if players only gained experience from friendlies if they're under 600-700 experience (or something like that), so that friendlies can prepare them for competitive matcfhes, but they won't be considered fully experienced unless they've played enough minutes in proper games. edited by longsands on 10/10/2023

Agree with all of that!! I enjoy building experience into my squad, very happy with the system as is.

there isn't really a suitable place to do anything about this in the match sim.  so i'll probably just look at other negatives around aging players.  perhaps slower recovery so your 38 year old isn't fit for as many matches as your 28 year old

then i would prefer a much stronger skill decrease on old players. the highest skill decrease i had so far was losing an overall of 5. Some player with 36 years still have an 900er overall. if they would decrease their skills back to their starting skills at 16 years, thats would be a good option i think.

5 overall is a lot imo. thats a max of 20 points a year. so if a 900 player starts to decline at 31 by the age of 34 he could be 840.

losing 5 overall is a bad joke its like a non existent skill decrease.
Hassan Sabeg went from Overall 851 to  Overall 846.

if a player is starting with 16 as overall 700 , reach his peak at 21 with 900 overall, than a player should decrease in a similar kind of speed and should end at 34 or 35 years at the 700 overall if skill decreasing starting at 29 or 30 years.

I think that would be too much if it was applied across the board - the ages of the last 5 Ballon D'Or winners in real life have been 32, 33, 33, 34, 34.
I like how currently some players manage to keep playing at a high level despite their age, while others seem to drop off quite a lot, and others retire quite suddenly (RIP Neil MacKillop)

Skills wise i don't think attributes should drop very much at all.  Its just the physical ability which should diminish with age.  a player isn't suddenly going to get worse at passing when he hits his late 30s.

So I'll go with longer recovery so managers can think about which games to play their aging superstars in.

any change will probably go in at the end of this season,

but the players who playing good at high age is just a very small minority. lots of players retire much earlier or ending up playing in lower leagues.

This is going in now that the current season main matches have finished.  i noticed the champs league was won with a full team of 30+ players!  This change won't actually stop that, but will make it more difficult for older players to play so many games in a season.
